HOUSTON - Rice senior Scott Filip became just the second athlete in Conference USA history to win a third decathlon and upped his career record to seven combined league titles with a victory Friday at Wendel D. Ley Track.
After entering the day with 4200 points, Filip added an additional 3502 points on Friday for a total of 7702 points. Filip tied former Owl Philip Adam (2009-11) as the only C-USA athlete to win three decathlon titles.
The three-time All-American won the 110m hurdles (14.76) to begin the day, earning 879 points. After a fourth place result (38.15m) in the discus, Filip advanced through five rounds of the pole vault, finishing second (4.65m/15-03.00) behind teammate Charlie Card-Childers.
The Bloomingdale, Ill. native wrapped up the competition with a third place finish in the javelin (53.44m/175-04) and a sixth place result (5:01.41) in the 1500m. Filip will next compete in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., which will take place June 6-9.
Card-Childers also earned C-USA All-Conference honors for the first time in his career by placing third in the decathlon with a personal best 7369 points. The Houston native placed in the top three in four of five events on Friday, including a victory in the pole vault (4.75m). As of Friday evening he ranks 20th in the nation in points in the decathlon. Also snagging a point in the decathlon for the Owls was Colton Torrance, who placed eighth with 6319 points.
In the lone running event of the evening, freshman Hociel Landa closed strong to place third in the 10,000m and earn all-conference honors with a time of 31:14.90. Senior Imran Bell scored four points with a fifth place finish (31:28.15) in the event before dashing off to graduation with ninth-place finisher Steve Booker.
In the early portion of the day, senior thrower Austin Riddle placed second (64.27m/210-10) in the hammer throw to earn all-conference honors for the third time in his outdoor career. Finishing right behind Riddle and snagging all-conference accolades in the hammer throw was senior Uche Ugwunze, who placed third with a final throw of 60.40m (198-02).
Matt Garcia (6th-57.33m) and Michael Yow (8th-56.65m) also collected points for the Owls in the hammer throw.
"Scott had a really good day for us and had some personal breakthroughs," Rice men's T&F head coach Jon Warren. "In addition, Charlie had a career performance under some tough conditions. Austin lost by just a few centimeters and Uche came through on his fifth throw to move from sixth to third. That competition is so good in our conference. And then in the 10k, Hociel really battled and had a heck of a race for just being a freshman."
Day three of the C-USA Championships will begin Saturday at 3 p.m., starting with the men's discus throw.
