
Card-Childers Wins Decathlon at Carl Knight Invitational

Skecher's Carl Knight Invitational Results
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Rice junior decathlete Charlie Card-Childers set a new personal record with 7294 points to win the decathlon on day one of the Skecher's Performance Carl Knight Invitational Friday afternoon at Stephen F. Austin.
Card-Childers, from Houston, won the second decathlon of his collegiate career with seven, top-three finishes and victories in four events. After racking up 3780 points on Thursday and setting PR's in the long jump (6.75m) and 100m (11.00), Card-Childers followed up with a win in the discus (43.40m) and second place finishes in the pole vault (4.35m) and javelin (56.01m) on Friday.
Card-Childers' 7294 points rank third in Conference USA and seventh in the nation.
Rice also got a victory from freshman Hociel Landa in the 3000m steeplechase, recording a time of 9:28.93 to beat out teammate Alex Topini (9:34.13).
The Owls also had four competitors in the hammer throw at Friday's Houston Alumni Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston. Senior Uche Ugwunze led the group with a second place finish, throwing 60.93m (199-11) to place second overall. In addition, Michael Yow established a PR with a heave of 59.97m (196-09) to finish third while Matt Garcia placed fourth with a throw of 57.28m (187-11). Sophomore Jesse Roberts rounded out the competition with a seventh place result of 43.39m (142-04).
Sophomore Clay Musial established a new PR in the 5000m race with a time of 15:18.70 while Matt Calem (3:59.35) and David Diaz (4:00.64) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1500m.
Rice will be back in action on Saturday with a majority of their team competing on day two of the Houston Alumni Invitational.
