Gonzaga Takes Game One Friday, 7-5

HOUSTON – Visiting Gonzaga scored four early runs and held the lead on the way to claiming a 7-5 win over the Rice baseball team in the opener of a four-game weekend series Friday evening at Reckling Park.
Gonzaga came alive in the top of third scoring four times on five hits. Rice responded with a run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth, but the Bulldogs plated single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to keep the lead at four, 7-3.
With one away in the bottom of the seventh, Rice junior shortstop Ford Proctor blasted a solo home run to right field. His first round-tripper of the year, for his team-leading 14th RBI pulled Rice to within three runs. A solo shot to left by Justin Collins in the eighth, his team-leading third homer of the season, made it a 7-5 game.
Proctor finished the night going 3-for-5 and scoring twice. Collins and Comeaux both had two hits in an eleven-hit attack. Sophomore right-hander Matt Canterino started on the mound for the Blue & Gray and struck out nine in 5.2 innings of work. Jackson Parthasarathy worked the final 3.1 innings on the mound allowing a one run while striking out four.
Rice is now 6-8 on the season. Gonzaga improved to 7-4 overall.
The series continues Saturday (March 10) with a double-header starting at 2 pm. The second game of the twinbill is scheduled to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Sunday's series finale is slated to begin at 1 pm at Reckling Park.
