The first game began with Rice going hitless through the first three innings. It finally broke through in the third when Braden Comeaux led off with a single for the Owls' first hit of the game. Ford Proctor then sent the third pitch over the right field fence for his second home run of the series and the third of the season to give Rice a 2-0 lead.
La Tech got one back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Mason Mallard walked and stole second. Taylor Young then drove him in with a single.
Rice regained its two-run lead in the fifth. With two outs, Ryan Chandler reached on an infield single and stole second. He then came around to score on Trei Cruz's single to right field.
However, the Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Young singled, knocking Kendal Jefferies out the game and bringing in Willy Amador. But Amador walked the first batter he faced and then on the first pitch, Mason Robinson knocked one over the left field wall to give La Tech the 4-3 lead.
Rice had a chance to tie it in ninth. After loading the bases with no outs, Andrew Dunlap struck out. Bradley Gneiting brought in Proctor with a sacrifice fly, but Cody Staab struck out to end the game.
Willy Amador took the loss, going 1.1 innings in relief while allowing four runs.
La Tech took the early lead in game two. After a leadoff walk in the first, Dalton Skelton tripled into the right field corner. He then came in on a ground out, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
But the Owls responded in the second. Ford Proctor reached on a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Andrew Dunlap sent the ball over the center field wall, tying the game at two.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the fourth inning, but Rice again came back. A double by Chace Sarchet followed by a Gneiting single put runners at the corners. Cox then brought in Sarchet with a long sacrifice fly to left.
Louisiana Tech again regained the lead in the fifth, this time for good. Back-to-back walks led off the inning. Two batters later, a single brought one in. The Bulldogs then took a two-run lead on a fielder's choice.
La Tech added runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Rice falls to 9-13 on the year and 0-3 in Conference USA. Louisiana Tech improves to 15-6, 3-0 in C-USA.
Rice returns to the field this Tuesday when it hosts nationally-ranked Texas A&M. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
