Surging Owls Looking for 6th Straight Win
The Rice Owls, winners of five straight, return to action on Saturday for an afternoon contest at Prairie View A&M. Rice just completed a 4-0 homestand in which they won by a margin of 15.2 points and have won five straight games overall. The Owls lead the all-time series against Prairie View, 14-3, including an 88-68 victory over the Lady Panthers last season.
Last Time Out
Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike scored a team season-high 28 points to help lead the Owls to a 67-56 home victory over New Orleans last Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse. Ogwumike made 9-of-17 shots from the field, including a season high four three-pointers, while making 6-of-7 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. The Owls used a big third quarter effort in which they outscored the Privateers by a 25-12 margin and opened up a lead as large as 17 points in the second half.
Grigsby Providing a Boost
Rice senior guard Lauren Grigsby has scored in double-figures in four consecutive games off the bench, averaging 15.0 points on 61 percent shooting, including 53 percent shooting (10-of-19) from three-point territory.
Rainey Closing in on Milestone
Senior forward Shani Rainey is closing in on becoming the 18th member of the Rice 1,000 point club. The Fairview, Texas native is just 10 points shy of 1,000 career points. Rainey missed the entire 2017-18 season after suffering a knee injury the WBI 2017 WBI Championship game.
Prairie View A&M Scouting Report
The Lady Panthers (3-2) are coming off a 67-59 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 1. Prairie View is holding opponents to just 49.8 points per game and 29.4 percent shooting. Senior guard Shala Dobbins leads the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) and was a SWAC Preseason First-Team selection while junior guard Dominique Newman is scoring 13.6 ppg on 49 percent shooting. The Lady Panthers were picked to finish third in the SWAC Preseason Poll.
