Mulkey ties school record with eight blocked shots in win
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Rice Owls women's basketball team closed out their non-conference portion of the schedule in winning style, defeating Incarnate Word 74-63 Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
Redshirt sophomore center Nancy Mulkey led all players with a career-high 20 points, making 10-of-14 shots from the field to go along with seven rebounds. Mulkey was also a disruptive force on the defensive end, tying Lauren Neaves (2006) for the single-game school record with eight blocks.
Freshman guard Haylee Swayze (14 points) and senior guard Lauren Grigsby (13 points) also scored in double-figures for the Owls while senior Nicole Iademarco and sophomore Sydne Wiggins contributed nine points apiece.
The Owls (9-3) were efficient on the offensive end, making 55 percent of their shots from the field and 11-of-13 (85 percent) at the charity stripe. Rice dominated the Cardinals in points in the paint (44-16) and fast break points (11-3).
UIW (0-11) also had three players score in double-digits, led by 16 points from Imani Robinson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
UIW took a 16-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes behind three made three-pointers while Mulkey kept the Owls close with six points in the quarter. The Owls scored 12 of their 13 points in the paint in the quarter.
Quarter 2
The Owls outscored the Cardinals 21-15 in the period behind 70 percent shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Rice made seven of their last eight field goal attempts in the quarter. After falling behind 24-20, the Owls responded with a 14-7 close to the quarter to take a 34-31 halftime lead. Six different Owls registered points in the period while Mulkey swatted five shots.
Quarter 3
Rice carried the momentum into the second half, outscoring UIW 26-18 in the third period behind 79 percent shooting as a team. Wiggins led all players with nine points in the quarter while Mulkey was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field for 6 points, along with three more blocks. The Owls used a 7-0 run and led by as much as 11 points with a 60-49 advantage entering the fourth.
Quarter 4.
The Owls held a double-digit lead for almost all of the fourth quarter, and never let UIW climb closer than 67-58 with 6:50 remaining in the game. Rice limited the Cardinals to 14 points in the quarter on 5-of-18 shooting.
