Men’s Basketball Takes to the Road for the First Time at Penn

HOUSTON — Rice takes to the road for the first time this Friday, Nov. 9, when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to face Penn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be livestreamed by ESPN+.
Scouting Rice
• Rice is 1-0 after defeating Saint Leo, 80-64, in its season opener Tuesday night.
• Rice returns five letterwinners and two starters from last year's squad.
• Graduate transfer Jack Williams recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
• Forward Robert Martin who was the team's returning rebounder, scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed six boards.
• Guard Ako Adams, the team's leading returning scorer, scored 14 points and redshirt sophomore Josh Parrish added 10.
• The Owls have a mix of upper and underclassmen on the roster. Of the 13 Owls, seven are either graduates, seniors or juniors. The underclassmen all will be suiting up for Rice for the first time, including five freshmen and redshirt sophomore Josh Parrish, who sat out last year after transferring from TCU.
• Head coach Scott Pera is in his second season leading the Rice men's basketball program.
Scouting Penn
• Penn is 1-0 after opening the season with a 72-71 victory at George Mason.
• The Quakers return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that finished the season 24-9, won the Ivy League and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
• Penn was picked to finish in second-place in the Ivy League.
• Junior guard Ryan Bentley is Penn's leading returning scorer, averaging 14.3 points.
• Junior forward A.J. Brodeur is the squad's second leading scorer from last year (13.1) and leading rebounder (7.2). He recorded a double-double against George Mason, scoring 19 points with 10 rebounds.
• Head coach Steve Donahue is in his fourth season at the helm of the Penn men's basketball program where he owns a 49-41 (.544) record. In 19 years as a head coach, Donahue is 249-255 (.484).
Series History
• This will be just the third meeting between Rice and Penn and the first since 1997.
• The series is split at one apiece as Rice won the first meeting in Houston while Penn took the victory in Philadelphia the following year.
Rice vs. the Ivy League
• When the Owls face Penn, it will be the 19th meeting against the Ivy League.
• Rice has split the previous 18 meetings at nine apiece.
• This is the first meeting against the Ivy League since the 2013-14 season.
• The Owls are looking for their first victory over the Ivy League since a 67-63 win over Harvard in 2008-09, a series of four games.
