Owls Return Home Tuesday To Begin Four-Game Homestand
The Owls were sound and solid controlling the tempo for the majority of the contest. Rice took the lead midway through the first quarter and stayed in front more than 34 of the game's 40 minutes. The Blue & Gray led by as many as 22 in the fourth period, and finished the game out-rebounding the Trojans 31-17 on the defensive boards.
Rice (1-2) was led in scoring guard Erica Ogwumike. The junior from Cypress, Texas, poured-in a season-high 21 points, crashed the boards for 19 rebounds (including 11 in the second half) and passed out five assists in 33 minutes of action. True freshman guard Jasmine Smith also scored in double-figures (17 points), converting on 7-of-10 field goal attempts.
Previously unbeaten Little Rock, however, refused to go away so easily at home. The Trojans made a 14-2 run in the fourth to cut the Rice lead to 10. Ronjanae DeGray led the way with 12 points, four rebounds and a blocked shot.
After three-straight road games to begin the year, the Owls next open a four-game homestand on Tuesday (No. 20). Start time against the Tigers is slated for 7 pm at Tudor Fieldhouse. For more information, be sure to visit www.RiceOwls.com and follow @RiceWBB on Twitter for more information.
