No. 23 UCLA Fends off Owls Comeback Bid

Rice falls 59-50 in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Rice Owls women's basketball team hung tough on the road at No. 23 UCLA but the Bruins fended off a late comeback attempt, hanging on to win 59-50 in a defensive battle at Pauley Pavilion.
The Owls were within single digits a majority of the night, and faced just a 55-50 deficit with 1:48 left in the game before a late UCLA three-pointer put the game away.
Rice (0-2) was led in scoring by junior guard Erica Ogwumike, who scored 13 points and came up one rebound shy of a double-double. Senior guard Nicole Iademarco also scored in double-figures (10 points), making 4-of-6 shots from the field.
The Owls outshot UCLA from the field, 38 percent to 37 percent, but were outscored in points off turnovers (19-7) and second chance points (13-7). UCLA had three players score in double-figures, led by 12 points from Lindsey Corsaro.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
Rice used five second chance points to keep close to UCLA despite shooting 3-of-13 (23 percent) from the field. Five different Owls scored in the quarter, one which UCLA led 13-9 after 10 minutes.
Quarter 2
The Owls outscored UCLA 10-5 in the first five minutes of the period and took their first lead of the night on an Iademarco three-point play at the 5:12 mark. Lauren Grigsby would add a three-pointer later in the quarter to put the Owls back in front 24-23 after UCLA had retaken the lead. However, the Bruins closed the quarter on 7-0 run to take a 30-24 lead into the half.
Quarter 3
UCLA outscored Rice 15-14 in the third quarter despite the Owls shooting 57 percent from the floor. Sydne Wiggins scored five points in the period, which included a three-point play at the 4:32 mark to pull the Owls to within 40-32.
Quarter 4
Rice trailed 45-38 entering the final quarter and were able to climb as close as 55-50 with 1:48 to go before UCLA's Lajahna Drummer hit a three-pointer with 1:27 to go to gain separation.

The Owls take the court again on Nov. 17 when they face Little Rock on the road for the finale of their three-game road trip, before returning to Houston on Nov. 20 for the home opener against Texas Southern.
