
Doubles Teams Advance to Regional Semis

The Lead: Rice advanced each of its doubles teams to the semifinal round while Priya Niezgoda picked up a pair of wins in consolation singles to highlight action for the Owls during the second day of the ITA Texas Regional at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station on Friday.
The Details: Rice improved to 6-0 in doubles play as the tandems of Anna Bowtell/Victoria Smirnova and Michaela Haet/Linda Huang picked up a pair of wins on Friday—including wins over entries from host Texas A&M--to move one step closer to giving Rice the regional doubles title for the second consecutive year (Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang won last year in Fort Worth). Bowtell and Smirnova will face ninth seeds Olivia Peet and Sydney Jones of Texas A&M at 9:30 on Saturday. At the same time, Haet and Huang will face off against North Texas' Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova in the other semifinal. The championship match is scheduled for 9:30 Sunday morning.
Niezgoda lost only six games over two matches to reach the consolation round of 16. She will face Texas State's Ana Perez at 9:30, looking to advance to the consolation quarters, which will be played at 11:30.
