Owls Compete at Texas Invitational on Friday

AUSTIN, Texas - The Rice Owls men's and women's track & field teams had a handful of athletes compete on the first day of the Texas Invitational on Friday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Redshirt junior Austin Riddle gave Rice a top-three finish in the hammer throw, placing third with a distance of 65.29m (214-02). Riddle saved his best throw for last, following up a 63.55m throw on his first attempt with the 65.29m heave on his sixth attempt.
Also in the men's hammer throw, Uche Ugwunze set a new personal best with a mark of 61.90m (203-01) while Michael Yow also set a personal best with a throw of 58.53m (192-00).
Redshirt sophomore Matt Calem recorded his first individual collegiate victory in the 5000m, winning the six-runner field in a time of 15:12.56.
In the 3000m steeplechase, Adolfo Carvalho placed fifth overall and set a new PB with a time of 9:27.75 while Connor Meaux finished eighth in the same event. Redshirt junior Scott Filip recorded a season-best (4.71m/15-05.50) in the pole vault while redshirt junior Erik Maher placed seventh in the javelin (57.42m/188-05).
On the women's side, senior All-American Daisy Ding finished fourth overall in the triple jump (13.01m/42-08.25) while senior teammate Cybil Obiozor placed eighth (12.69m/41-07.75).
Rice will be back in action Saturday in Austin with action beginning at 10 a.m.
