
Zinko Named Ashe Award Finalist

Rice senior Solomiya Zinko, who became the first women's tennis player to win four Conference USA titles in her career, has been named a finalist for the 2016 ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
Zinko was named the winner for the Texas regional and is one of 12 finalists for the annual honor. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 24. She is the first Rice women's tennis player to be named a finalist since Blair DiSesa in 2005.
Zinko concluded her career when the Owls fell to Vanderbilt in the round of 32 at the NCAA Women's Championship. She compiled a career mark of 37-17 in singles and 49-28 in doubles on the court while also serving as the president of the Rice chapter of SAAC.
The Ashe Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. The award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
