Rice junior David Warren became the fifth member of the Rice men's tennis team to be honored by Conference USA for his performance as he was named Co- Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week on the strength of his efforts over the weekend vs. Lamar and SMU.
Warren and Tommy Bennett knocked off a pair of doubles opponents over the weekend, losing just two games. They cruised past Lamar's 41st ranked pair of Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer, 6-2 on Saturday and then shut out SMU's 24th ranked tandem of Hunter and Yates Johnson on Sunday to give the Owls their first point in a 4-2 win over the No. 25 Mustangs. Warren added the clinching point vs. SMU with a three-set win.
Thanks to their two wins over ranked teams, Bennett and Warren have entered the national doubles rankings at No. 40.
Warren is fifth Owl to be honored this year with at least a share of the honor, joining Bennett, Adam Gustafsson, Emanuel Llamas and Jamie Malik. Rice is the first school since TCU in 2004 to have five players honored in a single season.
The 26th ranked Owls will be back in action on Thursday at 5 p.m. when they welcome Texas A&M Corpus Christi to the George R. Brown Tennis Center. They wrap up the regular season on Sunday when they welcome 28th ranked Tulane, who feature the nation's top ranked player in singles (Dominik Koepfer) in a 2 p.m dual on Senior Day
