The Rice women's tennis team opened a two-match weekend schedule in Huntington, West Virginia by dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 45 Virginia Tech at the Huntington Tennis Club.
The Hokies opened strongly by taking the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles. Rice was lead by freshman Fernanda Astete who picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Raluca Mita to score the Owls point.
"Credit to Virginia Tech. They took it to us in some spots today," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "It's important we rebound now and use this as an opportunity to grow and become a better team."
Rice closes out the trip east on Sunday and open its 2016 Conference USA schedule when they take on host Marshall at 10 a.m.
