Zinko Sparks Win in C-USA Opener

Solomiya Zinko delivered the clinching singles point as the Rice women's tennis team earned a split of their weekend road swing, downing Marshall 4-3 at the Huntington Tennis Club in Huntington, West Virginia on Sunday.
The matchup between the two finalists from the 2015 Conference USA Championship came after each had dropped dual matches with Virginia Tech earlier in the weekend and was the first conference match in 2016 for both schools.
The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court two where Zinko and Katherine Ip had seen a 5-3 lead evaporate before securing the point with a 7-4 win.
With only five courts available at the indoor facility, Zinko had to take seat until one of the first five matches was completed.
She began her match with the score tied 1-1 after Marshall's win on four. Savannah Durkin and Ip scored wins for Rice on courts five and two while Marshall grabbed a win on court one, leaving the Owls one point shy of a clinch.
Zinko staved off any Herd hopes of a victory by taking a 6-3, 6-2 win, running her 2016 dual singles record to 3-0.
Rice will open a slate of six consecutive matches at home when it hosts Texas State at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday, February 28.
