Durkin Takes Invite Singles Title

Freshman Savannah Durkin outlasted Houston's Maria Cardenas in a deciding tiebreaker to capture the Blue Flight singles title at the Rice Fall Invitational at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Sunday.
Durkin took the opening set 6-3, but saw Cardenas dominate the second to even the match with a 6-1 win before taking the title with a 10-6 win in the decider.
In double action, Rice's two entries faced off against other opponents rather than play each other in the finals, with both matches going to tiebreaks before the Owls emerged victorious.
Durkin and Alison Ho downed SMU's Anna Kate Anderson and Macie Elliott 8-7 (2) while Stephanie Nguyen agnd Lindsey Hodge downed Houston's team of Cardenas and Angela Lorenzo 8-7 (4).
