
Durkin Set for Pair of Finals on Sunday

Freshman Savannah Durkin raced to a straight set win in singles and joined with three Rice teammates to create and all-Rice final in doubles as play wrapped up on the second day of the 2014 Rice Fall Invitational at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the Rice campus.
Durkin dropped Alexandra Starkova of Louisiana Tech 6-3,6-2 to move into the finals of the Blue Flight in singles. The freshman from Miramar, Florida will face off against Maria Cardenas of Houston in the final on Sunday. Cardenas needed three sets to defeat Elizabeth Thoms of UTA, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-4.
This will be the second time Durkin and Cardenas face off this weekend. Durkin and Alison Ho defeated Cardenas and Angela Lorenzo in a tiebreaker to advance to Sunday's doubles final, 8-7 (5).
Ho and Durkin will face teammates Stephanie Nguyen and Lindsey Hodge at 9 a.m. on Sunday in the doubles final. Nguyen and Hodge earned a spot in the final with an 8-3 win over SMU's Anna Kate Anderson and Macie Elliott.
