Stephanie Nguyen and Solomiya Zinko captured singles matches and combined to win in doubles against opponents from St. Edwards University during their first day of competition at the Solinco Houston Open, hosted by the University of Houston.
Nguyen ground out a 6-4. 6-4 opening round win in the singles third flight over Ivana Zecevic of St. Edwards. Zinko raced to a 6-0, 6-3 win over the Hilltoppers Rafaela Haegele.
Zinko and Nguyen combined to post an 8-2 win in doubles over Summer Biggs and Vanessa Camara of St. Edwards.
Play in the Solinco Houston Open will continue on Saturday.
