The Rice men's tennis team will get their first taste of collegiate competition this weekend when the majority of the team travels to Midland, Texas to compete in the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. Competition kicks off on Friday in both singles and doubles and runs through Sunday.
"The Midland Racquet Club does a fantastic job of running their tournament," Rice head coach Efe Ustundag said. "The whole community is behind it and the support is tremendous. There is always a quality field so it's a great way to get things started. " Ustundag added.
The Owls will send six players to Midland (Srika Alla, Adam Gustafsson, Max Andrews, Gustavo Gonzalez, Henrick Munch and Zach Yablon) while the remainder of the squad will open their collegiate seasons next weekend when the Owls host their fall invitational.
While this weekend marks the start of the collegiate season, the Owls opened Fall competition last weekend by competing for a pair of wild card entries into the Houston Futures event that will be held in early October.
Alla won the wild card entry in to the main draw, while Gustafsson earned a spot in the qualifying round.
"Srikar played a great tournament and I was pleased the way all nine guys played," Ustundag said. "Of the eight quarterfinalists, five of them were Owls. It was a good weekend and showed that everybody came back ready for the semester."
