Rice's Natalie Beazant fell short in her drive to become the first Owl to win a USTA/ITA Texas Regional singles title, falling to Despoina Vogasari of Houston, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday morning at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University in Waco on Thursday.
Beazant bounced back from the loss in singles to combine with teammate Alison Ho to win the consolation doubles round with an 8-2 win over Texas State's Shannon Beckett and Evan Dench.
Beaznat, who was seeded 10th in the tourney, dropped the first set to the seventh seed Vogasari, then charged to an early 3-1 lead in the second. Vogasari rallied to take a 4-3 lead, before Beazant rallied to tie it 4-4 by holding serve. Vogasari responded to hold her serve and then clinched the win with a service break in the 10th game. M
The victory earned Vogasari a berth in USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships which will be held November 6-9 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
