
Beazant and Ip Advance to Third Round at Texas Regional

Senior Natalie Bezant and sophomore Katherine Ip advanced to the round of 16 while freshman Savannah Durkin fell in her bid to join them during the second day of action for Rice at the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University in Waco on Thursday.
Beazant, who is seeded tenth, dropped Anastasiya Shestakova of North Texas, 6-0; 6-4 on Friday morning to move on to the round of 16 where she will face fifth seeded Kiah Generette of Baylor.
Ip, the tourney's eighth seed, survived a second set tiebreaker against UTSA's Miriam Roswell to advance with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win. She will meet Texas A&M's Stefania Hristov on Saturday.
Freshman Savanna Durkin dropped her third round match to Baylor's Blair Shankle, 6-0,6-2.
Rice's three entries in doubles all dropped matches on Saturday.
Katherine Ip and Stephanie Nguyen opened with an 8-1 win over Abilene Christian's Ansley Boarman and Nada Marjanovic, but dropped an 8-4 verdict to Texas A&M's top seeded pairing of Maria Ines Deheza and Rachael Pierson.
Savannah Durkin and Solomiya Zinko opened with an 8-6 win over Baylor's Kiah Generette and Rachael James-Baker, but then fell to ACU's Brittany Reed and Erin Walker.
Natalie Beazant and Alison Ho dropped their opening match to TCU's Palina Dubavets and Alexis Periera 8-4 but came back to post an 8-3 win over SMU's Lisa Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova in the consolation round.
Action resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday when Beazant and Ho face ACU's Carlin Knezevich and Whitney Williams in the consolation round of 16.
