AUSTIN - Rice University's Kim Anicete posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Texas' Maya Zein to open play at the Texas Longhorns Women's Invitational on Friday.
Anicete would drop a 6-2, 6-0 decision to No. 7 seed Laura Claus in the second round of the main draw. She will face Texas' Juliana Gajic Saturday in consolation play.
Both Leah Fried and Stephanie Nguyen lost their opening-round matches before rebounding for victories in consolation play on Friday.
Fried dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Kenna Kilgo of Texas Tech. Fried defeated Texas' Carlene Leyden 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the consolation bracket and will take on UT's Annat Rabinovich on Saturday.
Nguyen opened tournament play with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Texas' Alex Martin. Later in the day Nguyen defeated Texas-Arlington's Christine Foote 6-1, 6-2. She will face UTA's Giada D'Ortona on Saturday.
Anicete and Nguyen lost a pair of doubles matches. Fried has teamed with UTA's Luicija Smaizyte and also lost their lone match on Friday.
