Dominique Harmath was wrapping up her final day of summer school at Rice and looking forward to a quick visit home to Toronto before the start of the fall semester, when an unexpected phone call changed her immediate plans.
Harmath learned that she had been earned a spot in the pre-qualification rounds for the 2011 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, which gets underway on Tuesday at the Rexall Centre on the campus of York University in Toronto.
A part of the US Open Series, the Rogers Cup is one of the Premier 5 and offers more than $2 million in prize money. It was first held in 1892 and only the US Open and Wimbledon have longer histories.
Harmath, who earned second-team All C-USA honors after finishing her freshman season with a 15-8 spring record, will face Françoise Abanda (currently 51st on the ITF junior singles ranking) in her opening match on Tuesday afternoon. The winner will advance to a round robin format on Wednesday and Thursday to determine the final list of wild card entries that will be available in the qualifying draw of the Cup.
"This is my first time playing the prequalifying for the Rogers Cup and I cannot wait to step on the court," Harmath said. "Opportunities like this don't come by very often so I'm really excited to take part in it."
