
Guzman, Nguyen Advance at Cougar Fall Draw

Rice University's Ana Guzman and Stephanie Nguyen each won a pair of matches Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals at Houston's Persona Legal Resources Cougar Fall Draw. The semifinals are slated for 1 p.m. Saturday on the UH campus with the finals set for Sunday.
In the Black Draw, Guzman defeated Texas State's Gabriella Rojas 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 before knocking off the tournament's No. 1 seed, Houston's Giorgia Pozzan 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Nguyen advanced to the semifinals of the White Draw with wins over Pascale Neubert of Oregon and Arkansas State's Ioana Teu. Nguyen scored a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Neubert before dispatching Teu with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Also in singles play in the Silver Draw, Leah Fried opened tournament play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Natalie Seira Petaia of Sam Houston State before dropping a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Southeastern Louisiana's Adriana Castillo.
In addition to competing in the semifinals of singles play Saturday, Nguyen will team up with Fried Saturday morning to compete in the doubles draw. The Rice tandem will take on Southeastern Louisiana's Morgane Dadot and Marion Courbis at 8:30 a.m. With a win, they would advance to the 10:30 a.m. quarterfinals.
