Terre Haute, Ind. - Senior Becky Wade became Rice's first cross country All-America in 25 years with a 23rd place finish at Monday's NCAA Cross Country Championship held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course.
Wade completed the 6K circuit in a time of 20:10.8 to become the Owls' first All-America since Pam Klassen in 1986 (11th) and 1985 (25th). The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association deem the top 40 runners as All-America.
"Becky had an unbelievable performance today," commented Owl head coach Jim Bevan. "She was 35th at the mile marker in 5:10, which is her fastest time and she gradually worked her way up. Cross country is a tough sport and Becky certainly was tough today against the best runners in the nation."
Sheila Reid of Villanova won the individual title with a time of 19:41.2. Georgetown won the team title with 162 points and was led by Emily Infeld's third-place time of 19:45.
This is Wade's fourth time competing at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and her second All-America award. She previously earned All-America status at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championship by placing 11th (34:38.39) in the 10,000m run.
