
All-Owls Finals Set for Rice Invitational

HOUSTON - With a four-match sweep of Texas on Saturday, a pair of all-Owl finals will decide the two singles champions Sunday at the 2011 Rice Invitational being played at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. Two Rice doubles teams will also go head-to-head for another title Sunday morning.Teammates Dominique Harmath and Natalie Beazant square off for the Blue Singles flight championship while Stephanie Nguyen and Kimberly Anicete will battle for the Gray Singles flight championship Sunday morning at 10. Prior to singles play, the doubles champion will be determined. Beazant and Nugyen will take on Harmath and Katie Gater at 9.
In semifinal play on Saturday, Harmath came back from a first-set loss to beat Texas' Elizabeth Begley 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 while Beazant posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Longhorns' Juliana Gajic.
Nguyen scored a 6-1, 6-4 win over Texas' Alex Martin while Anicete gained 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory against the Horns' Annat Rabinovich.
The Owls' two doubles teams to advance to the championship had to win a pair of matches Saturday morning. Beazant and Nguyen teamed for an 8-6 win over a team from DePaul before beating Texas' Begley and Martin 8-4. Gater and Harmath scratched out a 9-8 (7) win over a team from LSU before beating UT's Gajic and Rabinovich 8-4.
"Today was another very solid performance from our team," said Rice coach Elizabeth Schmidt. "You can't really ask for much more than to have an all-Rice final in all three draws. I'm proud of the team for the way they fought through adversity today and for the competitive spirit that they continue to show. It's nice to see their hard work pay-off and we are looking forward to some exciting matches tomorrow."
