FORT WORTH - Rice University sophomore Katie Gater won her consolation bracket quarterfinal match Sunday to advance to Monday afternoon's semifinals at the ITA Regional being hosted by TCU.
Gater, a transfer from Virginia, came back from a first-set loss to claim a hotly contested 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 (10-6) victory over Texas' Juliana Galic. The victory marked Gater's third straight win at the tournament since opening the tournament with a three-set loss in which the score was 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Gater had won her first two matches of consolation play in straight sets.
Next up for Gater is UTSA's Kavya Menon who also won in three sets on Sunday. The winner will advance to the consolation bracket final Tuesday morning.
Also on Saturday in a tight doubles match, Rice's Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath fell in the main draw quarterfinals to SMU's Edyta Cieplucha and Marta Lesniak 9-7.
After the Owls conclude play at the ITA Regional, up next for the team will be the Cougar Classic across town at the University of Houston the first week of November.
