FORT WORTH - Rice University's Dominique Harmath and Natalize Beazant have advanced to the Round of 32 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Texas Regional.
Harmath, the tournament's No. 8 seed, posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Texas State's Melissa Hadad following a first-round bye. She will face TCU's Olivia Smith in the Round of 32 Saturday morning.
Beazant, seeded No. 14, defeated Texas-Arlington's Christine Foote 6-2, 6-0 and returns to action Saturday morning to face Texas' Elizabeth Begley in the Round of 32.
Leah Fried and Kim Anicete also enjoyed first-round wins before bowing out of singles play in the Round of 64.
Katie Gater, Ana Guzman and Stephanie Nguyen will all play consolation draw matches on Saturday.
Gater and will play Texas-Pan American's Reety Raty. Guzman will play Texas-Arlington's Liucia Smalzyte in the consolation bracket Saturday. She opened the regional with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss to TCU's Millie Nichols before coming back to beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's LeAnne Maschall 6-3, 6-0. Stephanie Nguyen will take on SMU's Perri Anderson in the consolation draw.
Beazant and Harmath also teamed to advance to the Round of 16 in doubles play as did teammates Nguyen and Guzman.
Beazant and Harmath, seeded No. 8 in the doubles draw, opened play with an 8-6 win over Texas Tech's Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo. The Rice duo will play North Texas' Ilona Serchenko and Barbora Vykydalova Saturday morning.
Nguyen and Guzman posted a 9-7 win over Houston's Jo Garvey and Dionne Sanders then knocked off UTPA's Raty and Suncica Strkic. Up next for Nguyen and Guzman is Texas' Krista Damico and Aeriel Ellis.
