Sophomore Kimberly Anicete captured one singles titles while freshman Natalie Beazant played only two games but came away with a pair of titles in the final round of the 2011 Rice Invitational at Jack Hess Tennis Stadium on Tuesday. The final round matches were moved to Tuesday after heavy rains forced postponement on Sunday.
"Overall, it was a very solid weekend of tennis from our team," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "Houston really needed the rain, so it's hard to be too upset about being cancelled on Sunday, but it definitely was not the ideal situation for the players and fans for that to happen on the last day of the tournament."
Anicete battled teammate Stephanie Nguyen in the finals of the Gray Singles flight, emerging with a three-set win. She swept through the first set, winning 6-0 before Nguyen evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. Anicete then rebounded to take the third and deciding set, 6-2.
"Kim and Steph had an excellent battle today," Schmidt noted. "Playing against your teammate is a difficult situation, but I thought they handled it with grace and poise. And, to have two Rice players meet in the finals is always exciting."
Beazant and Nguyen met Katie Gater and Dominique Harmath in the day's first match to decide the doubles title. However Harmath was forced to withdraw from competition after suffering an injury in the third game of the match. Beazant was also slated to meet Harmath in the Blue Singles flight final, but was award the match due to Harmath's injury.
"It's unfortunate that Dominique got injured. She's a competitor and no competitor ever likes to have that happen, but, we are hoping that we can get her healthy to play Regionals in a few weeks" Schmidt stated.
