Broken Arrow, Okla. - With five runners in the top 20 including two in the top 10, the Rice Owls women's cross country team placed second at the Conference USA Championship held Monday morning at Indian Springs Country Club. The Owls tallied 57 points, while first place Tulsa, with four top 10 runners, finished with 27 points in winning its first team title. UTEP was third with 97 points. The Miners' Risper Kimaiyo won the 5K event with a time of 16:27.
"Our ladies ran the best they've run all year today and I'm extremely proud of them," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "We had 15 seconds from our one to four runners and 39 seconds from one to five. We beat 10 other schools in our conference and were beaten by the best team Tulsa has ever had."
Leading the way for Rice was Halsey Fowler placing sixth (16:57) and Nicole Mericle was eighth at 17:04. Senior Britany Williams ran 12th (17:11) and Allison Pye was 13th (17:12). Freshman Meredith Gamble placed 18th with a time of 17:36.
"Halsey Fowler has really improved and she had her best race ever," commented Bevan. "We have a very strong front four and Meredith Gamble as a freshman did a great job, moving up with Marie Thompson. We performed our best at the biggest meet of the year, thus far, and we are excited about the NCAA South Central Regional. Our conference continues to improve as a whole and is one of the better conferences in the country."
The Owls now get ready for the NCAA South Central Regional meet on November 14 to be held in Waco, Texas, and hosted by Baylor University.
