Rice University golf coach Drew Scott announced Wednesday the Owls have signed San Antonio native Christopher Contreras and Jeffrey Wibawa of Encino, Calif., to National Letters of Intent.
Contreras currently attends Ronald Reagan High School where last spring he won the Texas 5A Region IV Championship with a two-round score of 140 (67-73). Contreras also won the 2009 Tapatio Springs International Junior (72-68=140). He placed seventh at the 2009 Texas 5A state championship (72-73-74=219).
Contreras is ranked No. 108 by Golfweek and No. 184 by the National Junior College Scoreboard. He is a National Hispanic Merit Scholar at Reagan High School.
"We are very excited that Chris decided to become a Rice golfer," Scott said. "His desire for the game and to improve really impressed us as a staff and we look forward to seeing him in the lineup next year. His consistency and ability to be creative with his game will make him a solid collegiate player."
Wibawa currently attends Harvard-Westlake School. He is ranked No. 38 by AJGA/Polo, No. 42 by National Junior Golf Scoreboard and No. 60 by Golfweek.
Earlier this year, Wibawa placed second at the American Junior Golf Association's Phoenix Junior (70-70-68=208). He was also fourth at the California State Junior Amateur (68-70-74=212) and finished fifth at the AJGA's Northeast Open (71-72-72=215).
"Jeff has had a very impressive last two years of competitive golf and we feel like his game will only get better once he joins the collegiate ranks," Scott said. "A well rounded student-athlete, we are thrilled that Jeff chose Rice and will be an Owl for us next fall."
