
Rice Running at Conference USA Cross Country Championship

IRVING, Texas - The 2009 Conference USA men's and women's cross country championships are set for Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Bear Branch Sportsfields in The Woodlands, Texas. For the first time in league history, the University of Houston will play host to the one-day event with free admission.
The championships will feature the men's 8K race at 9 a.m. CDT, to be followed by the women's 5K race at 10 a.m. Following the completion of both championships, team and individual awards will be distributed.
The first 21 runners to cross the finish line at the conference championships will be named to the C-USA All-Conference first (1-7), second (8-14), and third (15-21) teams. East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP each have a men's and women's team. SMU, Southern Miss and UAB have women's teams only. Running for Jon Warren's Rice Owls are Simon Bucknell, Matt Carey, Michale Trejo, James Llamas, Gabe Cuadra, Sammy Abuhamra, and Scott Zivick. Last year the Owls came in third-place and were led by All-C-USA first teamers Aaron Robson (25:07) and Simon Bucknell (25:30) who placed 11th and 16th overall, respectively.
All-American John Beattie, of Tulsa, clocked a time of 23:30 in last year's race and helped the Golden Hurricane to a first-place finish. In his second trip to the NCAA Championships, the Southampton, England, native was named an All-American after clocking a personal-best 10K time of 30:05. Beattie and the Tulsa men bring national rankings into Saturday's event with a No. 29 slot in the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Poll and a No. 4 Midwest Regional mark.
