TCU Defeats Rice Soccer Team In Double-Overtime, 2-1

FORT WORTH -- In a contest that was equal parts evacuation from a hurricane that began assaulting the Texas gulf coast only a few hours before, and part road game against a regionally-ranked undefeated Horned Frog team, TCU rallied to defeat the Rice soccer team 2-1 in double-overtime at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium on the TCU campus Friday night in Fort Worth.
With many of their classmates and family members still back home in Houston bracing for Hurricace Ike, the Owls battled TCU into two overtime periods. The match was in the 109th out of a possible 110 minutes when TCU's Jackie Torda scored the game-winning goal unassisted.
The Owls broke the scoreless deadlock with an Erin Scott goal in the 50th minute. The native of nearby Richardson, Tex., opportunistically played an Anne Candee cross that caromed off the goalkeeper around the right side. Scott settled the ball and quickly hit a wide shot to the inside left netting. The score was her second goal of the season and put the Blue & Gray ahead 1-0 with 40 minutes left in the contest. TCU tied the game in the 78th minute on a goal by Lizzy Karoly, who played a deflection in the box after a free kick following a Rice penalty.
"We knew we needed to put a few more in to take care of the game," Scott said. "We had our shots. The next step is to work on finishing those plays."
Rice came close to regaining the lead late in the half when freshman Hope Ward served a cross from the right wing in the 85th minute, but the Owls could not get a clean shot attempt. In the 86th minute, sophomore midfielder Kate Edwards took a shot from inside the 18 that went just high over the crossbar.
"We had some great opportunities that unfortunately we didn't finish on, and TCU is a good team that played well," said Rice head coach Chris Huston. "We had a few really good chances that we didn't capitalize on and those could have made a difference in the game. We're telling our team is we have a lot of good teams on the schedule, and if we're going to be successful we have to give 90 minutes of good soccer. We just weren't that consistent tonight and that's what hurt us the most. The girls worked hard. The work-rate was there."
Rice fell to 3-2-0 on the season while the Horned Frogs moved to 5-0-1. It turns out the TCU game is the Owls' lone outing of the week.
The Rice-Princeton game that was originally scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 14) has been cancelled due to Hurricane Ike. Coach Huston said Princeton had informed her of its decision to cancel its road trip to Texas this weekend (where the Tigers' soccer team was scheduled to play games at Texas A&M and Rice). Coach Huston supported Princeton's decision and stated the Owls' soccer program will begin looking into the possibility of a replacement game.
"Princeton is concerned for the safety of its student-athletes and Rice completely supports that decision," Huston said. "Both schools were looking forward to the game, it just didn't work out this time."
