HOUSTON - The No. 64 Rice women's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine consecutive matches with a 6-1 victory over Texas-Arlington Sunday afternoon at Jake Hess Stadium.
The Owls (15-4) honored its graduating class of Tiffany Lee, Christine Dao, Dominique Karas and former player Kimberley Patenaude prior to the match. Rice also wrapped the home schedule with a 12-1 record.
"I'm happy to send this graduating class out with a win," head coach Roger White said. "They've accomplished a lot of firsts for the university. As a group, they've won the first conference championship in 2006, tallied a 39-7 home record and notched a combined 385 victories."
Rice capitalized on a default victory at the No. 3 doubles position before Tiffany Lee and Rebecca Lin knocked off Sara Pesic and Daiana Negreanu in the No. 2 hole to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage.
UTA's (3-7) top pair of Monika Hadvigerova and Klara Jagosova defeated Julie Chao and Dominique Karas 8-4.
Lin and Varsha Shiva-Shankar grabbed default victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively to move the Owls ahead 3-0.
UTA trimmed the deficit to 3-1 as Hadvigerova notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Lee.
Karas swiped the momentum right back and secured the victory for Rice with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph in the No. 2 match before Chao tallied a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Jagosova at the top of the lineup.
Braid rallied from a one set deficit to claim a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory for the final margin of 6-1.
Rice takes its nine-match winning streak on the road against conference rival SMU. First serve against the Mustangs is on-tap for noon on April 5th.
