HOUSTON - The Rice women's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 sweep against Stephen F. Austin Wednesday afternoon at Jake Hess Stadium on the Rice campus.
The Owls (6-3) dropped a combined five games in doubles action. The pairs of Julie Chao and Dominique Karas along with Emily Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar notched a pair of 8-2 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
Tiffany Lee and Rebecca Lin emerged with an 8-1 triumph in the No. 2 position over Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova.
"It was nice for us to return home after a weekend on the road," head coach Roger White said. "We played a solid match and took care of business across the board."
In singles play, Lee turned in a dominant 6-0, 6-1 effort against Sanjana Kapur at the No. 2 slot.
Lin put the Owls ahead 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 against Gadeva before Shiva-Shankar provided the clinching point at the bottom of the lineup with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Christelle Kaempfer.
Chao fired off a 6-2, 6-1 win over Roxana Enica at No. 1, while Emily Braid won her third consecutive singles match at No. 5 with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win against Smolnikova.
Karas added the finishing touch with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mary Harrision in the No. 3 hole to secure the sweep.
