FORT WORTH - Julie Chao, Ana Guzman and Rebecca Lin dropped straight set decisions to seeded players in the second round of the main draw Saturday at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships from the Bayard H. Freidman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
"We competed hard and I think we were able to learn a couple of things today," head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "These types of matches give us a good measuring stick and show us where we want to go.
Chao bounced back for a 6-2, 6-1 consolation victory over UTSA's Nathlaie Wallin. Guzman and Lin lost hard-fought matches to opponents from LSU and Baylor.
In doubles backdraw action, Rice tallied a 2-1 doubles mark. Lin teamed with Alex Rasch for a 9-8 win over SMU's Nicole Briceno and Sophie Quist. The pair shutout the Mustang duo in the tiebreaker. Chao and Guzman notched a 6-1 triumph against ULL's Mia Gordon and Marina Guana.
The Owls continue consolation action Sunday.
"Rebecca played two extremely tough singles matches but the good thing about this tournament is that we get the opportunity to keep playing," Schmidt said.
