MIDLAND - Julie Chao of the Rice women's tennis team lost a 7-6, 6-2 decision against Pepperdine's Alex Liles in the Round of 16 Saturday at the Midland Invitational.
In consolation action, Varsha Shiva-Shankar split matches picking up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Iris Rendon of Tylor Junior College before falling in the quarterfinals. Alex Ratch lost a gritty 7-6, 6-3 match.
"Julie battled today and just came up a bit short against a quality opponent," head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "The team took some good things from this tournament and are looking forward to competing again next weekend at home."
Rice plays host to the Holiday Inn Rice Classic next weeekend at Jake Hess Stadium.
