SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Tiffany Lee battled to a 6-4, 7-6 semifinal victory and earned a spot in the Flight 2 finals Saturday on day two of the SDSU Fall Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center on the San Diego State campus.
Lee squares off with Jane Braverman of Pepperdine Sunday in the flight championship. Braverman knocked off Varsha Shiva-Shankar 6-3, 7-5 in the other semifinal.
"Tiffany continues to compete strong this weekend," assistant coach Kristina Kraszewski said. "She's really starting to settle into her game. When she does that, there's no one that can stay with her on the court."
Christine Dao and Dominique Karas notched consolation wins in Flight 1. Dao picked up a 7-6, 6-0 win over San Diego's Milou Teeling, while Karas emerged with a 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 victory against Camelia Todorova of Arizona. Rebecca Lin lost a 6-1, 6-2 decision to San Diego State's Milana Yusapov.
"I was proud of how Christine and Dominique bounced back this afternoon," Kraszewski said. "These are two very important wins for them and a step back in the right direction."
In doubles play, Karas and Shiva-Shankar regrouped from yesterday's opening round setback and won both of their matches. The duo started the day by rolling to an 8-0 win against Pepperdine's Riane Mitchell and Marigrace Marshall before dispatching Ozge Ataley and Olivia Colman of San Diego State in an 8-5 triumph.
"It was amazing to see how Dominique and Varsha completed each other as a doubles team," Kraszewski said. "This is the first time they've had a chance to play together, and they played fantastic doubles all day."
Lin and Lee were dealt an 8-4 setback by Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava and Tania Rice in the quarterfinals.
The Owls finish the SDSU Fall Classic Sunday with doubles action slated to get underway at 9am PT.
