Houston -
Picking up right where he left off last season, senior Pablo Solares romped to victory Friday in the mile at the Leonard Hilton memorial meet at Yeoman fieldhouse, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships with his 4:03.85 clocking. Solares, an NCAA qualifier outdoors in the 1500-meters last year, burst to the front after the halfway point and ran on to win by almost four seconds and set a meet record. Rice placed third in the 16-team meet with 54.5 points, as Houston scored 97 for the title.
Justin Maxwell won the 5000-meters with a personal-best time of 15:21.62, with teammate Brad Morris in fourth at 15:28.54, also a personal best. Luke Stadel picked up bronze in the shot put with a toss of 16.33 meters/53-7.
NCAA finalist Omar Wright opened his season with a fourth-place effort in the high jump, clearing 2.03m/6-8, while Jason Colwick, the 5A Texas state high school champion last May, was 5th in the pole vault with a 4.60m/15-1 effort.
