Houston -
Andrew Zukoski won his first collegiate title Saturday, taking the 5000-meters at the Houston Indoor Invitational with a time of 15:49.71 to lead the Owls in the team's second meet of the season. Senior Pablo Solares, an NCAA national qualifier in the 1500 outdoors last year, showed well in the 3000, finishing second in 8:21.06.
Senior shot putter Luke Stadel notched a seasonal best with a toss of 16.83 meters/55-2.75 to place third, and freshman multi-eventer Philip Adam showed that he may be the latest in a line of good decathletes at Rice, scoring 4,937 points to take third in his heptathlon debut.
Bubba Heard, running in his second meet after playing for the Owls in the New Orleans Bowl in December, clocked an indoor personal-best 22.08 for the 200 on the tight curves at Yeoman Fieldhouse. Gridiron teammate Gary Anderson set a personal best in the prelims of the 60 with a 6.94, but chose not to run in the final.
