WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Behind a pair of goals from freshmen Katelyn Ostendorf and Erin Scott, the Rice soccer team remained undefeated on the young season with a 2-1 road win over Army Friday evening at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Owls moved to 3-0-0 for the first time in the history of the program and wrap up the weekend's east coast road trip with a Labor Day game at Ivy League foe Penn in Philadelphia on Sept. 4.
Rice opened the scoring in the game's 33rd minute when defenders Kellen Schugart and Laura Barber corralled a loose ball and worked a pass to Ostendorf in front of the net. The freshman from Zionsville, Ind., hit a shot into the right side netting for her first goal of the season and the first score of her college career.
In the 83rd minute Scott beat a pair of Army defenders with the ball and zoomed in on left side of goalkeeper. The rookie from Richardson drew the cadet keeper in, then blasted a shot into right corner from eight yards out for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 Rice advantage.
Though there was just seven minutes left in the contest, the Owls' insurance goal proved to be a big. Army refused to quit and rallied for a goal in the 89th minute to make it 2-1, scoring off a free kick from 20 yards out.
"The freshmen really played well and stepped it up tonight," said Rice head coach Chris Huston, now in her sixth year at the helm of the program. "We had a lot of offensive opportunities, ones that we created for ourselves. We may not have capaitalized on the offensive opportunities, but we created them and gave ourselves some good chances."
"This is a good win, beating a mentally tough and physically conditioned team on the road," Huston added. "We had heart and desire, but I am still looking for the game where we play that way for the full 90 minutes. Tonight we were more consistent than we've been, so we're continuing to take steps."
Senior keeper Amy McClintock earned the win in net for Rice with seven saves. The Owls doubled Army's shot output on the night. Scott and sophomore Caitlin Robbins paced the Blue & Gray with four shots each.
"Amy did a good job and had some nice saves," Huston said. "It was really great to get goals from our younger players who have been working so hard and I thought Caitlin played really well. Teams have a lot of respect for her and give her their full attention."
Rice is 3-0-0 for the first time since starting the soccer program in 2001. Army (2-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season. The Owls are at Penn on Monday before returning home for a three-game homestand.
