HOUSTON -- Rice senior Blair DiSesa continues to garner awards as she was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team Selected By CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
The women's At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, and water polo. A total of 45 student-athletes were honored as members of the first, second and third teams in the university division.
A native of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., DiSesa led the Owls to new heights in 2006, both on the courts and in the classroom. Academically, she is a two-time academic all-district first team member and carries a 3.89 grade point average with a double major in economics and managerial studies. Previously this spring, she was honored with a Rice Scholar Athlete award for holding the highest GPA on the women's tennis team. In April she received the Joyce Pounds Hardy Award, which recognizes the Owls' top overall student-athlete for her efforts in sports, in the classroom and in the community. Additionally, Rice was named an ITA all-academic team the past three seasons.
On the hardcourts, DiSesa helped the Owls achieve unprecedented success as they won the program's first conference title. For her efforts, she was selected by the Conference USA coaches as the player of the year. In addition to Rice's ensuing bid to the NCAA team championships, the program's first since 1998, DiSesa received a bid to the singles championships, the first for an Owl since 1986. She finished her collegiate career with 92 singles victories, fifth all-time at Rice, including 24 in her final season.
