BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Emily Braid led the Rice women's tennis team with a 2-1 singles mark as the Owls closed out the fall over the weekend at the Harvard Invitational in Boston, Mass.
The Owls faced players from Harvard and Virginia, both teams that finished in the top 25 last spring, and Arizona, which finished last year ranked 34th, in a non-bracketed tournament.
Braid scored a pair of victories against the host Crimson on Friday. She rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Lizzie Brook, and also teamed with freshman Veronica Sagastegui for an 8-4 doubles victory against Catriona Stewart and Elizabeth Brook.
In addition to Braid's singles victory on Saturday against the Wildcats, a trio of her teammates scored big. Freshman Rebecca Lin swept Natalia Toborow 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Alanna Rodgers downed Tina Razloznik 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Sophomore Dominique Karas, who returned to the Rice lineup this fall after suffering a knee injury a year ago, continued to look strong with her 7-6, 6-2 win against Camelia Todorova.
Lin and Rogers also teamed for a doubles victory against Arizona, dropping Todorova and Razloznik 8-5.
Junior Tiffany Lee added another singles win for the Owls on Sunday against Virginia, beating Kristen McVitty 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (4).
"This was an outstanding weekend of competition for us," noted head coach Roger White. "The team played tough up and down the lineup against some quality opposition. This tournament gave us a good sense of what we need to do in the off-season to prepare for the spring schedule."
The Owls open the spring dual-match schedule on Jan. 20 at Baylor. The Bears finished the 2006 dual season ranked sixth after advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2006 NCAA championships. Rice makes its first home appearance of the season on Jan. 27 against Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
