Owls Have Strong Finish at ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Ben Harknett and Filip Paroci made it to the doubles semifinals and Filip Zivojinovic won the singles consolation draw as the Rice men's tennis team wrapped up its stay in Fort Worth at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's South-Central Regional Championships on Monday.
Harknett and Paroci, seeded eighth in the main draw, began the day with an 8-3 quarterfinal win against Louisiana-Lafayette's Shaun Ellison and Zack Taylor. The Owls then faced off with the fifth-seeded pair of Matt Brown and Dave Galic of Baylor. The Bears won the semifinal match 8-6.
Also in Monday's doubles quarterfinals, Rice's Jason Mok and Christoph Müller had their upset bid thwarted by the fourth-seeded pair of Milan Mihailovic and Miguel Reyes Varela of Texas in a 9-8 decision.
In main draw singles, the Owls' Ralph Knupfer lost to Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Zivojinovic had a busy day on Monday, winning three singles matches to take the consolation draw. He began by defeating Southeastern Louisiana's Julien Lousao in the quarterfinals. The Owl then beat the Ragin' Cajuns' Ellison 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, and closed out the tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 victory against the Longhorns' Josh Zavala.
Mok was also busy with singles on Monday. The Rice senior blasted SMU's Daniel Gonzales 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, then fell to Zavala 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals.
The Owls return to action on Friday as they travel to Austin for the Texas Invitational.
