
Rice Beats UTSA In Opener

HOUSTON - The Rice men's tennis team opened the 2007 dual-match season on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory against Texas-San Antonio at the Downtown Club at the Met in Houston.
Playing at No. 1 doubles, senior Jason Mok and sophomore Christoph Müller paired to defeat the Roadrunners' Nenad Maric and Adam Becker 8-4. Rice junior Ralph Knupfer and newcomer Tobias Scheil also scored an 8-4 win, beating Robin Fernandes and Nate Avila at the two ladder position.
With UTSA defaulting at No. 6 singles, the Owls took a 2-0 lead into the start of singles. Müller put his team ahead 3-0 with his 6-4, 6-3 victory against Maric playing at the two position. Junior Filip Zivojinovic then secured the team win with his 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Avila at No. 5.
The Owls return to action next Sunday at the Downtown Club at the Met, where they will host Michigan State at 11 am, followed by a dual with Lamar.
