Rice Wins Pair Against Michigan State, Lamar

HOUSTON -- The Rice men's tennis team scored a pair of victories on Sunday, defeating Michigan State 4-0 and Lamar 5-0 at the Downtown Club at the Met to improve to 3-0 on the year.
The day began for the 28th-ranked Owls against the Spartans. Rice opened in doubles with a pair of 8-4 victories to secure the first point. Ralph Knupfer and Tobias Scheil were victorious against Nick Ranks and Michael Flowers at No. 1. Then Filip Zivojinovic and Filip Paroci iced the point at No. 3 against John Allare and Alex Forger.
Zivojinovic blasted Michigan State's Scott Rasmussen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 to open singles play. Jason Mok then downed Jason Norville 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 to put Rice up 3-0. Playing at the top spot, Paroci secured the team victory as he upset Rinks, ranked 51st nationally, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
In the evening match, Rice held off a determined Lamar squad in doubles to take the first point. After Mok and Christoph Müller beat Emmanuel Olivier and Tyler Cobb 8-2 at No. 2, the Cardinals fought back with a win at No. 3. The Owls secured the doubles win with another Knupfer/Scheil victory at No. 1.
After the tough battle in doubles, the Owls came on strong in singles to put away the match. Mok had another impressive win, downing David Wanja 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, and Zivojinovic was again victorious at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Andres Medina. Müller and Scheil both recorded 6-2, 6-0 wins to close out the team win.
The Owls travel to Minneapolis, Minn., next weekend to face Drake on Friday and No. 34 Minnesota on Saturday.
