TULSA, Okla. -- Rice senior Robert Searle split his singles matches at the 2005 Polo Ralph Lauren/ITA All-American Championships main draw in Tulsa, Okla.
Searle, ranked 24th in the national preseason poll, swept Joey Atlas of Duke for a 6-3, 6-4 win in the opening round of 64. The native of Orpington, England then fell to fifth-ranked Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32.
Searle and junior Ben Harknett also received a bid to the main draw of the doubles tournament where they came just short of a first-round upset. The Rice duo, ranked 21st, pushed 13th-ranked K.C. Corkery and James Pade of Stanford to the brink before succumbing to a 9-8 (5) decision.
The Owls return to action on Oct. 14 when the squad splits to compete at the South Carolina Invitational and the Midland Racquet Club Invitational.
