Women's Tennis: Freshmen Sweep Singles

After a 6-0, 6-1 win yesterday, Goodrich turned in another dominating victory, downing UTEP's Dione Gonzales 6-2, 6-1. Fisher grabbed a 7-5, 6-3 win against Brooke Biddle of SMU, while Chao held on in the second set for a 6-1, 7-5 victory over the Miners' Adriana Boykova. Junior Judith Hagedorn snared the Owls' fourth singles win of the day, defeating Elizabeth Stone of UTEP 6-4, 7-6 (6). Natalie Briaud, also a junior, lost a closely fought battle with Ana Brnas, falling 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) to the Miner.
Junior Kylie Wallis and sophomore Stephanie Moat recorded the Owls' lone doubles victory of the day: an 8-5 decision against the team of Patricia D'Arcy from Arkansas and Rice teammate Karen Chao.
The tournament, which also features players from Arkansas, SMU and UTEP, concludes on Sunday.
