James Blackburn enters his first season as the Owls basketball strength and conditioning coach.
Blackburn comes to Rice after spending the previous two years at the University of Nevada as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning. During his time with the Wolfpack he was responsible for Women’s Basketball, Baseball, and Women’s Soccer.
In 2018 Blackburn obtained his master’s degree from Utah State University while working with the Aggie football, basketball, and tennis teams for three seasons. In the 2018 season he assisted the USU football team to an 11-2 record and a New Mexico Bowl win. In that same season Blackburn’s Aggie tennis team earned a back to back Mountain West Conference Championship.
He graduated from The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and an emphasis in Strength and Conditioning. As an undergraduate he was a member of the Titan Football team from the 2012 to 2016 seasons.
Blackburn earned his CSCS certification from the NSCA and Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist (FRCms).
James and his wife, Rachel, have a son, Cameron.
