Owls Earn Four Podiums After Two Days at American Championships

DENTON – The Rice men's track and field team collected several podium visits and personal bests to pace the team at the American Outdoor Championships. The Owls are tied for second as a team after the first two days of competition.
Ty Hampton claimed the javelin title for the second time in the American Conference off a season-best 74.26m throw on his final attempt. Jack Greaves also secured a podium spot in second place with a throw of 71.82m.
Sultan Bakare used a personal best mark of 64.24m to finish second in the hammer throw, while Daniel Sowell's personal best throw of 59.41m finished fourth. Sowell added a seventh-place showing in the shot put.
Andrew Murray closed night two with a third-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase, while Brandon Martz finished fifth.
Alexander Männel had a fourth-place finish in the decathlon with 6,958 points, while Luke Ivy also scored points with a seventh-place finish.
On the track, Edward Bocock and Christian Edgar advanced to tomorrow's finals in the 400m hurdles, with Edgar also qualifying in the 110m hurdle finals. Jackson Moran also moved on to the finals for the 1500m.

"A very good start from our group these first two days. You have to start with the javelin, with Ty and Jack taking first and second with a pair of awesome throws. Sultan with an incredible personal best in the hammer throw to finish second, and Daniel had a personal best to finish fourth. Today Daniel came back and finished seventh in the shot put. The multis had a great showing with Alex with a fourth-place showing and Luke added points in seventh. Impressive weekend from those two. Andrew Murray capped the night off with a podium finish in the steeplechase in third, and Brandon Martz with an awesome race to finish fifth. Tomorrow we look forward all the finals, with Christian Edgar in both hurdle events and Edward Bocock also in the 400 hurdles. Jackson Moran also making finals in the 1500m. Along with our relays, Juan in discus, Pat in the high jump and our vaulters, I look forward to seeing how we finish out the meet."
